Uganda's Jinja Hippos join the team

STINGZ™ are the official kit suppliers for Uganda’s Jinja Hippos Rugby Club for the 2021/22 Season.

The Jinja Hippos are based on the banks of the mighty River Nile in Jinja, Uganda. Building on the long and rich history of rugby in Jinja, Hippos Rugby was founded in 2014 at Dam Waters Rugby Ground by a group of young boys who had limited prospects. However, rugby gave them the opportunity to receive scholarships to attend Jinja Senior Secondary School, enabling them to complete a formal education.

Over the years Jinja Hippos Rugby Club has become the number one ‘upcountry’ club in Uganda, comfortably leading the multitude of clubs striving to compete with their Capital City counterparts in Kampala.

In 2017, Hippos Rugby won the Eastern Region Championship and promotion to the Ugandan Premier League.

Jinja becomes STINGZ’s second flagship club in Uganda’s Nile Stout Premier League after Makerere Impis.

Breaking away from the Club’s traditional colourway of white, black and red with a hint of yellow, the new, bespoke design of the Hippo’s jersey retains the predominantly white colourway, but adopts a bold and striking yellow and black hoop design.

The prominent watermark image in the middle of the jersey is, of course, a roaring hippo!

The side panels adopt a gradient design, with the black transcending into yellow, while the raglan shoulder area is black with white polka dots, giving the jersey a more traditional, tribal aesthetic.

The jersey is crafted using raglan sleeve construction, with a contrast black crew neck collar as well as durable flatlock and reinforcement stitching. The national flag is displayed on the back of the collar.

Hippos Rugby have a Development Team, the “Crocs”, who currently play in the Eastern Region Championship and a Female First team is in the pipeline. With their unrivalled ambitions of becoming Premier League Champions in the next few years, Hippos Rugby is flying the flag for Jinja and Eastern Uganda Rugby.
